Made of recycled and fair trade elements, seashells found on French beaches and ceramic beads, made by my mum. The felt comes from an old hat and one grey bead was made by Ruby.

Moving to Nottingham

I moved to Nottingham over the summer and I am now having a look around ...
And so far, here are a few things I have seen, people I have met ...

At the Wirkworth Festival, I met Clare Goddard and really loved her studio shop and her felt pieces (see below). I loved the fact that the space looked white and bright and clear and neat ....
There, I also found these amazing paper jewellery pieces by Sarah Louise Kelly (Saloukee). They were very simply presented under transparent glass bowls.

In Nottingham, last saturday, I went to a monthly arts market "Apples and Pears" organised by Curiostity Haus (you can turn the volume of the sound off on this site). There were lots of interesting very affordable craft works and I'm very likely to apply for a stall for the next market end of October !!

There I also met Eirann, a multi-talented American artist, printmaker and writer (and she can speak French too !). I loved her delicate prints. Here is her blog.

Yesterday, I went to the Hopkinson Gallery (previously The Arts Organisation, opposite the train station, they are having a re-launch next saturday night) where there was one of the Judy's affordable Vintage Fair. The artists' studios were also opened upstairs and I met Julia Church, who makes wooden jewellery using pyrography. I had already noticed these necklaces before and it was nice to meet her in person. She advised me to go to Debbie Bryan's studio and shop, which looks fabulous.

Today I have started to repair one of my friend's favourite seashells necklace. It was a gift she received when she travelled to Thailand. She loves it but the nylon string is too old now and has started to break. I have replaced it with a "beading wire". It is quite interesting to rebuild it as it was made with an intertwining of two strings (new technic for me !).
I have also made her a pair of matching earrings as she wanted to have.

Today I was lucky to be making jewellery from SHOP in Stoke, Staffordshire.

SHOP
"SHOP is a new space in Stoke Town, Stoke-on-Trent, that transforms an empty shop into a venue for unusual and exciting performance, interventions and screenings. SHOP is working with a mix of the most interesting and exciting local, regional and national artists and producers to bring a truly eclectic mix of artistic activity to suit all tastes. We plan to take over Stoke Town with site-specific interventions, a hub of interesting creativity inside the SHOP and a couple of parties along the way. It is extremely important for SHOP that all activities involve a live action, that the location and people in the location are considered in the work, and that the Stoke Town and not only the shop become the site for the work. So far we have confirmed we will be working with locally based artists Kate Lynch and Anna Francis, biTjAM and Mark Brereton (Blurb) and more to come. SHOP is funded by Arts Council England & North Staffs Regeneration Partnership and supported by Blurb, Fierce, Urban Vision North Staffs, Staffordshire University and more.!

Celine Siani Djiakoua, aged 37, of Chatham Street, Shelton, is a jewellery maker who sells and showcases her French-inspired creations in a variety of ways.

How did you get into making jewellery?

I started making pieces when I was a teenager and it was trendy to design and make your own jewellery from polymer clay, which gives you a variety of colours and shapes.

What else do you do for a living?

I've just graduated from Staffordshire University in fine art, as well as being a qualified primary school teacher. I am, officially, a visual artist, creating multi-layered, ephemeral installations using various mediums.

Is jewellery-maker your profession?

Making jewellery is just one of my many hobbies, but now I have graduated I am trying to go into business with it. Although it is not yet official, I am gathering all the information I can about getting my jewellery up-and-running in a successful business.

How long does it take to make a piece of jewellery?

The pieces vary in how long it takes. For the Atlantic Seashell collection, I have to find the seashells in France – I was born in Nantes, moving to Staffordshire seven years ago, but still visiting France several times a year – clean them and arrange them by colour and shape. I then sand them and make the jewellery with them. It can be a long process.

Have you showcased your work in the area?

I recently organised and curated some of my jewellery at Artwaves Gallery, Burslem. It was essentially going to be just my pieces at first, but then I ended up with nine other people showcasing their work too, ranging from crafts to photography. I also have some pieces on sale at the Burslem Art Gallery.

Do you sell all the pieces you create?

I don't sell anything I haven't made myself, but I've started to collaborate with two friends. One makes wallets for my jewellery to be sold in from recycled wallpaper and the other makes felt to line the wallets. So when a customer buys a piece, they are getting the work of three people.

Do you enjoy making jewellery?

I will always make jewellery as I love it and, as the Seashell pieces are quite successful, I think people love the jewellery too, which is nice to know.

The Makers - collective exhibition at Artwaves Gallery, Burslem

Last week-end I was very proud to organise and be part of a collective Art/Craft exhibition which ran for 3 days. This show was conceived at the boundarie between craft fayre and art show. It involved 9 local artists : Katie May Shipley, Andrew Conroy, Kate Lynch, Rachel Grant, Ruby Sufi (for The String Theory), Deborah Nicklin, Perry Walmsley-Pitts (for Perryceramics), Anna Francis and myself. For the curation, it was very important to me that the works would be presented in a harmonious mixture, balancing and responding to each other. Several pieces were collaborative works between artists and this is something I am looking forward to developing in the very next future.

I have been making jewellery since I was a teenager.

When I went to University in Nantes to study Psychology, I made friends with lots of African students. I love the African culture and went to Africa twice. One of my friends, Ahoefa, who was very much involved in promoting African culture, invited me once for a multicultural craft fair. I had created a series of jewellery inspired by African Art. The venue was prestigious and the fair had a lot of visitors. I was very fortunate to have been invited for my first fair ! My work was very successful and I sold a lot ...

Two weeks ago, I went to my local flea market and bought a couple of items. I then took them apart and started to reassemble them into new compositions.
